FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

New Cab Calloway’s First Summer School of the Arts Wilmington, DE School Will Show Students the ‘Cool Factor’
Wilmington, Delaware (February 9,  2010) — Cab Calloway School of the Arts will put the cool in school at its first Cab Calloway Summer School of the Arts, a seven-week program for rising fifth- through eighth-graders with a few courses available to High Schoolers in the last two weeks of the program.

“The goal is for our students to begin to see how science, history, math and language underlie everything we think of as art, ranging from painting to dance to website design,” said Kathy Cammett, the executive director of the new Cab Calloway Summer School of the Arts. “There’s definitely a ‘cool factor’ in the technology and creativity, but it’s even cooler when a student starts to see how all the pieces fit together.”

The program will be held at the Cab Calloway School of the Arts in Wilmington. Each one-week session will be different, and students can come for as few or as many weeks as they wish. The fee is $250 per week. For more information, visit www.cabsummer.org.

“We want kids to start understanding, rather than memorizing, and that means looking at the world as a whole rather than in compartments like ‘geography’ and ‘algebra,’” Cammett said. “Art is never about what’s on the surface, what’s easy to see.  Ceramics is science, music is math and innovation requires creativity. The analog and digital arts both make a great starting point for learning to think about the big picture.”

Cammett, the summer school’s executive director, is a performer, teacher, leader and innovator in drawing young people to the arts. A passionate teacher, Cammett currently teaches courses on auditioning, diction, voice, opera and the music industry at Opera Delaware and Cab Calloway School of the Arts.

The Cab Calloway Summer School of the Arts is a summer program for every child based on the extraordinarily successful Academics + Arts educational model demonstrated by the Cab Calloway School of the Arts. The Cab Calloway School Fund, a 501(c)(3), whose mission is to support Cab Calloway School of the Arts students, teachers, parents, programs, administrators and facilities, will be the sole beneficiary of this project.
