Where To Watch Total Solar Eclipse

Solar Eclipse Lessons On Event Promotion

NASA’s promotion of the solar eclipse is an example of an excellent mix of marketing and PR. And you can definitely benefit from planning your business promotion in a similar way – combining paid media with earn media, and expanding the reach of your promotion.

If you Google-search “where to watch solar eclipse,” you will find over 1 million results with related articles and blog posts…and that’s if you don’t count related videos and images. Now, what would happen if you typed in the name of your business event; how many results would you see?

Here’s what you can learn from the marketing of the solar eclipse experience and how you can adapt that learning to help make your business event a success.

Solar Eclipse Marketing

Plan Ahead

Well in advance of the solar eclipse, you started seeing media coverage of the event. News articles, blog posts, website pages, social media posts. The closer we get to the solar eclipse event, the more hype is created with more news coverage and anticipation online. You can follow this template for your business event.

What to do: Support your marketing campaign with public relations tactics. It will give you more exposure and a chance to get earned media for your event. Need public relations support?

Have Clear Call-To-Action (funnel your audience)

The hype and media coverage about the eclipse has the very strategic purpose of funneling people, offline and online, to the locations to watch the eclipse.

What to do: Be very clear what the next step is for your audience. Whether it is to bookmark your event, download information about watching your event live or to follow your business’ Facebook page. Do not waste your effort – include a call-to-action.

Integrate Offline And Online

Not everyone wants to travel to an event. Think about digital tools that your audience can use to tune in and connect with your business. Live video or pre-recorded video will amplify your offline event and reach a much broader audience than your offline event alone. This will help you collect more leads and impressions.

What to do: Plan digital support of your event. Have a live video managed by your company and provide tools for attendees to live stream your conference with a discoverable hashtag.

Use Video-Streaming Tools

The technology is already there. You can have regular live-streaming over YouTube from your smartphone or from a digital camera. Several social media sites provide live video tools, too: Facebook Live, Snapchat, Instagram Live Stories, Periscope, etc. You can use your regular camera or go for 360-video and VR. The latter is gaining more popularity with its ability to make you feel nearly physically present during the event.

What to do: Choose your video-streaming platform based on your audience presence and engagement. Trust professionals over a part-time employee to do live-streaming for you. Sound and video quality are equally important. And it involves some planning as well to make sure your video is a good representation of your event.
